Taman Tirtagangga

Taman Tirtagangga

The name of this small town Tirtagangga literally means "water of the Ganges" and is known for its royal baths which can be visited at the Taman Tirtagangga water palace. In 1948 this water palace was built by the last king of Karangasem on the site of a sacred spring. The architecture is a unique combination of traditional Chinese and Balinese styles. At the time, it was used by members of the royal family for relaxation and as a reception place for important guests.

Nowadays everyone can use these royal baths and some believe they are very suitable for swimming, so you might want to bring your swimsuit! Besides taking a dip, it is also very worthwhile to wander around and visit the different baths and the gardens in which they are located. It is actually more of a waterpark located in a beautifully landscaped garden than a palace. The whole consists of a mixture of ponds with koi carp, fountains in the shapes of animals and nymphs, colorful flowers and shrubs, terraces and basins.

I myself am perhaps the most fond of the area around Tirtagangga, with its overwhelming green rice fields. One of the most beautiful in Bali, so be sure to explore the area. The rice terrace photos that you see on your Bali postcards are often taken in this area.
